You have to consider that Tickets are not sold in the museum and not many people know about this being disappointed in not being able to get in. 5) Xochimilco Boat Ride: The Xochimilco Boat Ride is located in the South Part of Mexico City and is an amazing experience to do with a group of friends and explore the famous Xochimilco Canals. I call this The Mexican Gondolas. Be sure to explore the Isla de las Muñecas (A creepy island with hundreds of dolls) and enjoy the music of the mariachis playing throughout the canals. Last year right before Easter, I and my family (my boyfriend and my son) headed to Höfn. On our way there we took a quick stop at the famous Reynisfjara in Vík. I grabbed my camera and took some great shots there.. but believe it or not I accidentally deleted all the photos! Typical me. Guest Blogger: Eydis Ogn Gudmundsdottir, Eydis Gudmunds Reynisfjara is a world-famous black-sand beach found on the South Coast of Iceland, just beside the small fishing village of Vík í Mýrdal. Reynisfjara is widely considered to be the most beautiful example of Iceland’s black sand beaches. Those taking the Ring Road around the country, or else those heading to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, will pass it, and I recommend making a stop there! BUT visitors to Reynisfjara must be made well aware of the potential dangers present at the beach! First of all, the rolling, roaring waves there are particularly violent, often pushing far further up to the beach than many would expect. These waves can appear when least expected, even on incredibly still days.. so stay safe! After our quick stop in Reynisfjara, we continued our drive to Höfn. Glacier Adventure on Breiðamerkurjökull The day after we arrived and Jóakim (my boyfriend) woke up at 08:00 and drove to meet our guide at Glacier Adventure. Our guide, Mike, drove us towards the Glacier Breiðamerkurjökull. Breiðamerkurjökull is the glacial tongue that extends from southern Vatnajökull and into the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón, creating the icebergs that define this beautiful landmark. Breiðamerkurjökull is constantly retreating, breaking, and melting, causing the jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to increase in size: it is less than a century old, but already the deepest lake in Iceland. Our first stop was in the Ice Cave, it was amazing to be there while Mike told us that it is disappearing, and wouldn’t be there next year. It’s constantly melting and changing. When we got out of the ice cave we put on our crampons and started walking up the glacier. After a little while, we found a crack.. we sat down, ate our lunch and then we climbed down the crack and went inside the glacier!! It was so much fun, a bit scary.. but fun. We walked further down into the glacier, it was a bit cramped but an unbelievable experience. As soon as we got down from the glacier the weather started to cool, and it got a bit windy.. so we went up there a perfect timing in good weather! Along its vast stretch lies the Banff National Park – Canada’s first national park and further up in the north is the Jasper National Park – Canada’s largest national park. Both the parks are part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 230 Km long Icefield Parkway – rated as one of the most scenic drives in the world connects the two parks. Banff National Park Millions of people visit Banff year-round for hiking, biking, skiing, camping and to see its turquoise lakes, magnificent mountain peaks, and picturesque towns and villages. The hub of all the activities in the resort town of Banff. This picturesque small town is located within the Banff National Park and is about 140 km from Calgary Airport for many this is the starting point of their Canadian Rockies adventure. The skyline of the town is dominated by the peaks of Mt. Rundle and Mt. Cascade. The main thoroughfare – Banff Avenue is dotted with chateau-styled hotels, restaurants, boutiques, and souvenir shops. There is a fee for every visitor to the Banff National Park and you can pick up your ticket or pass along brochures, guides, and maps from the Visitor Centre located at Banff Town or at Lake Louse. The most popular activity is to take a cable car ride with the Banff Gondola to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. Once at the summit you will be surrounded by some of the most breath-taking mountain scenery. At the peak, there is a 3-tier deck offering spectacular panoramic views of the mountain ranges. A stroll on the boardwalk (Vista Trail – Banff Skywalk) leads to the weather observatory which is a National Historic Site on Sanson’s Peak for stunning views of the town and the valley. One can also hike the South East Ridge Trail to reach Sulphur Mountain’s true summit. Banff Trails & Lakes There are several trails in and around the town and very close to the downtown. Most of these are easy walks and offer beautiful views of the mountains and the rivers. The Tunnel Mountain Trail leads to the summit of Banff’s smallest peak. It is moderately steep, but you are rewarded with beautiful views of the town and the surroundings. One of the best trails is the classic walk along the Bow River. Just steps away from the town center offering scenic views of the Bow River, the Bow Falls, and the gorgeous Banff Spring Hotel. The Bow River Trail and the Bow Falls Trail are paved walkways along the river on either side. The falls trail has a separate cycle track along with a pedestrian one that leads you to the top of the falls. Of the many attractions in the Rocky Mountains of Canada, the most famous ones are the turquoise blue lakes. The glacier-fed lakes are one of the top draws and the are many of them around Banff and along the Icefield Parkway. The closest to the town is Lake Minnewanka. Located just 20 km away from the town center this is very popular amongst the locals for fishing, canoeing, and skiing. It is the only lake in the Park that allows limited use of powerboats. The boat cruise is one of the highlights of this lake which are not there in the other ones. Two of the most popular lakes are about 60 km from Banff town – Lake Louise and Lake Moraine situated along the Bow Valley Parkway. The Bow Valley Parkway is a 50 km long scenic route from Banff Town to Lake Louise dotted with many viewpoints offering superb views of the Castle mountain. One of the popular sites on this route is the Johnston Canyon. A treasure for hikers with the creek, two waterfalls, and lush forest. Arguably the most famous of all lakes is Lake Louise, the sight of which is out of just out of the world on a bright sunny day. The turquoise-colored water, the mountain peaks, the glacier, and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise resort all combine to provide an incredible sight. Not too far away is the iconic Lake Moraine, the image of which comes up most of the time when you search google for the Rocky Mountains in Canada or the Canadian Rockies. Situated at the base of a valley of ten peaks, the reflections of which on the still turquoise blue waters makes an incredible sight that is hard to explain in words. Icefield Parkway Other than the two National Parks, the drive on the scenic Icefield Parkway is a must for every visitor. Give yourself a full day to enjoy a 230 km drive to Jasper Town from Banff. You will pass through some of the most amazing landscapes of mountain peaks, emerald lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, and an abundance of wildlife that include bighorn sheep and mountain goats amongst others. Just 34 km north of Lake Louise along the parkway is one of the largest lakes in Banff National Park -Bow Lake. The still and clear blue waters mirror the surrounding mountain peaks. Up next just off the parkway is hidden deep in the valleys of Bow Pass is the one highest lake in the Canadian Rockies - Peyto Lake. A short branch road leads to the magnificent view to perhaps the bluest amongst all the lakes. A 2.5 Km long and steep pathway takes you down to the lake. At the heart of the Icefield Parkway is the Columbia Icefields – one of the largest non-polar icefields in the world. Also known as the Athabasca Glacier, it is one of the most accessible in the world. From the Glacier Discovery Center, you will travel on a massive Ice Explorer Bus to a place where you can walk on the Glacier. Not too far off the glacier is one of the man-made wonders – the Columbia Icefield Walkway. Perched almost 1000 feet above the spectacular Sunwapta Valley on a cliff edge, this is a 1 km long walkway leading to a platform with a glass floor. It is one of the most thrilling experiences of the Canadian Rockies. Traveling further north just before you reach the town of Jasper is the Athabasca Canyon. It is worth stopping and exploring the stunning waterfalls against the backdrop of the gorgeous mountains. Various paved pathways through the narrow canyon lead you the many viewpoints. Jasper National Park At the end of the parkway that runs along the Canadian Rockies is the quaint town of Jasper right in the heart of the Jasper National Park. Possibly one of the smallest towns you may ever get to visit, everything in the town is walkable. The closest airport to Jasper is Edmonton which is almost 365km away. However, you can reach Jasper directly by train from Edmonton. Via Rail Canada has a daily service that takes about 6 and half hours. There are also two scenic trains from Vancouver – The Rocky Mountaineer and the Via Rail service. Jasper in many ways is like Banff but on a smaller scale. It attracts those who are looking to get further off the beaten track, and it is a paradise for adventure seekers. Be it snowboarding, white water rafting, mountain biking, or paddling, its 1200km of hiking trails attract many visitors. One of the thrills of visiting Jasper is spotting wildlife especially the larger mammals like moose, deer, caribou, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, coyotes, wolves, cougars, and black bears. The top attraction in the town is the Jasper Sky Tram – Canada’s longest and highest aerial tramway. In less than 8 minutes you will at an elevation of over 2200 meters. From the upper tram station, you can hike to the summit of Whistler Mountain. The hike is about 1.5km long and from the summit, you get a view of all the surrounding mountain ranges. Jasper Trails & Lakes Like in the Banff National Park, you also need a ticket or pass for admission to the Jasper National Park. The most famous attraction in the park is Lake Maligne – the largest lake in the Canadian Rockies. Located about 50km from Jasper Town, this Lake has a 90-minute cruise that goes past one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies – the Spirit Island. The island against the backdrop of a mountain peak, glaciers, and the alpine forest is one of the iconic images of the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Jasper National Park is a mecca for hikers with numerous trails and perhaps the best among them is the 3.5km long Maligne Canyon Trail. Malign Canyon is the deepest of all canyons in the Canadian Rockies with a depth of more than 50 meters at certain points. There are six bridges built across various points that provide hikers of all abilities an opportunity to marvel at this incredible natural wonder. The second bridge is at the highest point and from the third bridge, you get to see a spectacular waterfall. During the wintertime, there is a guided ice walk that lets you walk along the Canyon’s frozen floor. Among the many lakes in the park, the closest are the twin lakes – Pyramid and Patricia. Located at the foot of the Pyramid mountain, Lake Pyramid lake drains into the Athabasca river through a 2 km long creek. There is an island in the Lake, named Pyramid Lake Island, connected by the wooden footbridge. Close by is Lake Patricia is which is also very similar. Both lakes are just 5km from Jasper Town and are very popular among locals for fishing and paddling. Travel Advice for the Canadian Rockies Recommended Itinerary – An ideal itinerary would be of 7 days with 3 days each in Banff & Jasper and a full day for driving on the Icefield Parkway between Banff and Jasper. The closest airport to Banff is Calgary which is about 140km and takes at least 2 hours and 30 mins. The closest airport to Jasper is Edmonton which is about 365km and takes at least 4.5 hours. So out of the 3 days each in Banff and Jasper, you will only have 2 full days to explore the Canadian Rockies. Transportation – The Roam transit is a very convenient way of getting around Banff Town and its main attractions. In the summer and winter months, you can go all the way to Lake Louise. There are plenty of Shuttles and Tours both in Banff and Jasper that will take you to all the major attractions. Best Time to visit – The summer months are the best from late June to early September. These months are also the busiest. Most of September to early October is also good when the crowds are less. Although there is some snow throughout the year at least in Jasper, December to March is the peak season for winter sports lovers. As my daughter completed her studies at Trinity College – Dublin, I returned to explore new tours created by Failte Ireland, the country’s major tourism authority. We’d learned that the rivalry between posh Dublin 2 and traditionally working-class Dublin 1 runs deep, much like other North-South conflicts, but the tour of famous statues in town, supplemented by QR codes that can be scanned to hear the “famous” speak ensures enjoyment on both sides of the River Liffey. Oscar Wilde First stop, Oscar Wilde. I’ve visited his statue in Merrion Square more than any other in the city. The emerald coat, the expression on his face, and the writer’s lounge as he stares out across the street to his childhood home all fit so well with what you read of his quips and more literary efforts. George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (1912) became the movie My Fair Lady (1964). He had close ties to the Gallery and felt he had received most of his education here. Shaw bequeathed a third of his royalties to the museum upon his death. It’s been sufficient to fund programs for disadvantaged youths and society at large. At the Clare Street entrance, you’ll see his statue in the grand hall. Listen here Wolfe Tone On to St. Stephen’s Green, Wolfe Tone, a lesser-known figure from the 18th century, played an important role as the revolutionary who fought to overthrow English rule and was killed for the trouble, leaving a young wife and children behind. Listen here! I was most impressed, I think, at his offhand comments about Napoleon. It helps to bring the timeline into a better perspective. Molly Malone Down to Suffolk Street to meet Ireland’s most famous (and fictional) fishmonger, Molly Malone. Her eponymous song has become the city’s unofficial anthem. Her statue even acknowledges it. While she was fictional, the song references historically accurate expressions like “Dublin’s fair city” and street vendors’ shouts of “alive, alive O.” I find it interesting that an American exchange student, Michaela Mcmahon won the public writing competition that created Molly’s script. You can listen to “Molly” here! Trinity College - Dublin Next in order would be the two statues within the walls of Trinity College -Dublin. The pandemic kept me out, though I’ve seen these statues so many times as my daughter attended graduate school here. Katie Byrne from Estate Facilities was kind enough to share the information with me. George Salmon was a 19th-century mathematician who spent his academic career at TCD. From a student to the provost, he wasn’t one to keep his opinions to himself. “Women will enter Trinity College over my dead body!” more than one tour guide has told me he said. Well, he was right. While women were granted the right to attend Trinity, none actually matriculated, it is said, until the actual day of his death. You can spend days exploring Trinity’s campus. The Book of Kells. The Long Hall (one of my favorite places on campus). The pitch all the way to the east. Spend time at the Campanile and, if you walk under it, realize no Trinity student is likely to do so. It’s bad luck to walk under it before graduation. You’ll be surprised by the sculpture spread throughout the campus. Many are award-winning, like the second entry for the Talking Statues. Meeting Place Crossing the River Liffey via Ha’Penny Bridge leads you right to Meeting Place aka “The Hags with the Bags.” Despite best efforts, none of us could find a QR code, so I found the site on www.talkingstatuesdublin.ie. Here’s what they say: “Just across the Ha’penny Bridge, two women have sat down for a chat in the middle of a busy day’s shopping, their bags at their feet. Situated in one of Dublin’s most popular shopping areas – one bag is from Arnotts on nearby Henry Street – Jackie McKenna’s 1988 bronze sculpture Meeting Place was designed to reflect everyday city life. Shortly after the sculpture’s installation, one of the bags was stolen – no small feat, given that it was made from bronze and extremely heavy. The bags are now secured firmly to the ground.” I hope they restore the QR code soon. It’s an easy walk from Meeting Place over to O’Connell Street. Fidelity Right by the River Liffey, you’ll see the Daniel O’Connell monument “the Great Liberator” with four women sitting below. Fidelity is the winged one on the front right with the dog. The others represent Patriotism, Courage, and Eloquence. The map tells us that “Dublin poet Paula Meehan imagines Fidelity as a wise, compassionate figure ‘rest[ing] in the stillness / between one human heartbeat and the next.’ As you hear the walking meter bleat in the background, it's easy to imagine each beat. James Larkin The statue of James Larkin on O’Connell Street is right in front of the Spire, just before the GPO. “Big Jim,” imposing physically as well as mentally, fought for the rights of unskilled workers to unionize. He coined the phrase “A fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.” He’s best known now for his role in the 1913 Dublin Lockout. You can listen to him here. Cú Chulainn Inside the General Post Office (GPO), you’ll find Cú Chulainn. You can see the QR code from the outside, but the best view is from the inside (through the marble high ceilings make the recording sound spectacularly loud, garnering more than a few stares). Listen here “The son of the warrior god Lugh and the mortal woman Deichtine, young Cú Chulainn (the hound of Culainn) won his name after killing the smith Culann’s fierce hound in self-defense, and offering his services as a guard dog in its place.” Killed in battle by his enemy Lugaid, Eamon de Valera chose this statue to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. He found the sculpture to “symboliz[e] the dauntless courage and abiding consistency of our people.” James Joyce It’s about a block to reach James Joyce on Earl Street North. Ulysses, Finnegan’s Wake, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Dubliners are amongst his works. A favorite resting place for weary shoppers or revelers, Mr. Joyce contemplates his permanent return to Dublin, the city he considered central to his writing, though he lived abroad most of his life. He moved to Dublin from Edinburgh at 14 and following his time as a trade union leader, political theorist, author and revolutionary socialist became a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. Listen here! The execution of Mr. Connolly and the other Easter Rising Leaders deeply angered the Irish, arousing sympathy in America and Britain which led to Irish independence. Touring Dublin following these statues and visiting the city around them gave me a new perspective on this city I’m loving more intently, more profoundly as I immerse myself in its history. It’s more than 1300 years old, and so much of its history is lost. But I remain grateful to the historians that came before me to help me understand this land of my ancestors. Fantastic Family Travel to Utrecht in the Netherlands by Lotte from Phenomenal Globe One of the best family-friendly cities in Europe is Utrecht, the 4th biggest city in the Netherlands. Located just a 30-minute train ride from Schiphol, this ancient city has canals that rival those of Amsterdam but without the crowds. Utrecht is best explored on foot, though there is also an extensive bus network and a tram line. Most sights are located in the city center where you’ll never be more than a few meters from a cute café or nice restaurant (Jozef and Buurten in de Fabriek are excellent places to eat with kids). Regarding accommodation, the Eye Hotel has a gorgeous family attic room with lots of amenities for kids (including a changing table, baby cot, and toddler toilet seat). During your family adventure in Utrecht, you won’t be bored, quite the opposite. It will be hard to choose which sights you’ll want to add to your Utrecht itinerary. For traveling families, these are some of the must-visit spots: Dom Tower: who doesn’t love a bird's eye view? Climb the 465 steps and admire the views over the city from the top of the 112-meter-tall Dom Tower. If you’re traveling with young kids the best thing to do is to park your stroller at the information center and bring a baby carrier. Miffy Museum: Miffy is such a beloved child’s figure and at the Miffy Museum kids can explore Miffy’s beautiful little world. During the Christmas Holidays, there is a special Christmas theme but this lovely museum is worth a visit year-round, especially for kids between 2 and 5. Spoorwegmuseum: if your kids love trains, this is the place to go. Learn about train history in the Netherlands, go for a ride on a tiny train, visit a show or explore the historic trains that used to chug around the Netherlands. D-Day sites in Normandy Family Travel with Teenagers by Rachel Heller from Rachel's Ruminations Visiting the Normandy beaches where D-Day happened is a great trip to take with teenagers. My husband and I hit on the idea when our son was about 14 and was studying the World Wars in school. It was the first time he’d ever shown any interest in any school subject besides the gym, so we jumped on it, deciding that our next summer road trip would include World War I sights in Belgium and D-Day sites in France. Our 13-year-old niece ended up coming along too, and while she hadn’t had any say in the theme of the trip, she enjoyed it too, with a quick addition of a few chateaux to the itinerary and several meals at creperies. There are many locations in Normandy that offer opportunities to learn about the D-Day invasion, all of them a part of the Liberation Route Europe, which includes many more locations across Europe. A good place to start would be the Memorial de Caen Museum in Caen for an overview of the entire war. To focus down on D-Day, visit the Arromanche 360, a circular film that is remarkably effective for developing empathy for the individual soldiers caught up in the chaos of the Normandy beach landings. It’ll make it clear to your teenager that war is not the neat and tidy series of strategic steps portrayed in school textbooks nor as predictable and emotionless as in video games. Then stroll the beach – or if you visit in the summer, enjoy a swim – at Arromanche, where the remains of the artificial harbor built by the invading forces are still visible. There are plenty more places to visit, depending on your and your teenager’s interests. To name just a few, the Juno Beach Center looks at the Canadian volunteers’ role in D-Day and the Utah Beach Museum focuses on the Americans at Utah Beach; it even has an original B26 bomber. You can tour a German bunker at the Museum of the Merville Battery or learn about the role of radar at the Radar Museum 1944. A trip to the D-Day beaches would combine well with a visit to Paris or Mont-Saint-Michel, or take the ferry out to Jersey or Guernsey. Alternatively, if you have a car, continue the war theme into Belgium to learn about World War I. In that case, Ypres is the place to start, at the excellent In Flanders Field Museum and the Menin Gate. The Holy Cross Mountains are the perfect place for a vacation. Everyone will find something for themselves here. If you like castles and palaces, your list should include Chęciny with the ruins of the royal castle located there and Krzyżtopór, which for a long time was the largest object of this type in Europe. While in Bodzentyn, be sure to visit the ruins of the Palace of the Bishops of Krakow. Are you interested in geology and nature? No problem! A huge number of nature reserves and geological sites await you in the Holy Cross Mountains. It is from this region that the oldest traces of the tetrapod in the world come from. In addition to the old mines and rock outcrops, it is also worth getting to know the history of ancient metallurgy along with the well-known all over the country. Traces of Jewish communities are a separate topic of hiking in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. They existed in many cities and towns, and today the only traces of them have forgotten cemeteries or ruins of synagogues. If you and your family want even more attractions, there are still many places waiting for you in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains area. The Dinosaur Park in Bałtów, the Living Porcelain Museum in Ćmielów, the Mines in Krzemionki Opatowskie entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List or the miniature park in Krajno are just some of them. Tibidabo mountain is often skipped by travelers but is very nice for families to visit because on the hill you find a children's amusement park. From the top, you have an amazing view of the city. Another fun activity is visiting the aquarium in Barcelona. If your kids want to learn more about the underwater world, this is something for you. There is also a large room at the end of your visit where they can play. The best activity for many families is visiting Camp Nou. You can independently visit the stadium in the morning and visit different rooms and enter the field itself. If you plan it right, you can watch an FC Barcelona match in the evening. If you are lucky with the weather the beaches on the Scottish islands have white powdery sand and turquoise water. Some of the best beaches can be found in the Outer Hebrides. Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris is widely regarded as one of the best beaches in Europe. Another beautiful beach is Bernery beach on Berneray Island. It can look so tropical that the Thai tourist board once used it by mistake in an advert for Thailand. The downside is that it takes longer to get to the Outer Hebrides with the journey involving a ferry crossing from mainland Scotland. Fort William and Glencoe are easier to get to and are well known for hiking. This is where Ben Nevis, UK’s highest mountain, is located. It is only 1,345 meters high but doesn’t underestimate the climb and be aware of how quickly Scottish weather can change! Fort William is the starting point of the Jacobite Steam Railway, or the Hogwarts Express if you are a Harry Potter fan. The coastal area (from Oban to the Isle of Skye) is a great place for whale watching during the summer months. Sightings of seals are nearly guaranteed. Another area to consider for your itinerary is the Isle of Skye with its rugged and green landscape. Some of the best scenery and walks are around the Quiraing and up to the Old Man of Storr. Further south you’ll find Edinburgh with its famous castle and Glasgow which is better known for its nightlife. Both have plenty of attractions to keep children (and grownups) occupied should the weather not be on your side. The train network allows easy travel between the main cities but to have the flexibility to get to the sights mentioned above it is best to rent a car. In terms of accommodation, there are bed and breakfasts and hotels all over Scotland. If you are staying in one place, renting a cottage is often the most convenient option.
